    Pope Urban II Calls for a Crusade at the council of Clermont. He promised redemption of sins for whoever took part.
  • 1096

    The First Crusade

    This was to recapture the Holy Land and Jerusalem from Muslim control.
  • 1099

    European forces recapture Jerusalem

  • 1145

    The Second Crusade

    It was organised by the Pope and European nobles to recapture the city of Edessa (in Mesopotamia).
  • 1189

    The Third Crusade

    Launched to retake Jerusalem after it fell to the Muslim leader Saladin.
  • 1197

    A crusade army captures Beirut.

  • 1202

    The Fourth Crusade

    Called by Pope Innocent III to retake Jerusalem from its current Muslim overlords.
