Thousands of knights, surfs, and peseants took the call from Pope Urban II. The crusaders reached Constantinople and crossed the Asia Minor. In June they were accompanied by forces from the Byzantine Empire and took Nicaea.

In November of 1095, Pope Urban II called the first crusade. He called upon the knights of France to go to Jerusalem, or the Holy Land. He did this as a response to the Byzantine Empire to help repel the Seljuk Turks.
