    José de San Martín gave false information to Indian spies. The spies fed this information to the Spanish, who went to head off the Army of the Andes. When the Spaniards realized they were tricked, they hurried to protect Santiago. The two armies met at the Battle of Chacabuco, where the Army of the Andes wiped out over half of the Spanish troops.

    José de San Martín returned victorious to Buenos Aires after the Battle of Chacabuco. The Spanish, who were bitter after their defeat, tried to recapture Santiago. José de San Martín returned once again to Chile with the Army of the Andes. They embarrassed the Spanish again, this time by capturing all of the artillery.
