    Prehispanic period

    Prehispanic period
    There are rests of human occupation in Bolivia since 12000 BC. In 1200 BC some sedentary cultures were developed, those are the Chiripa and the Wankarani. Moving forward, the Tiwanaku culture marked the beginning of the Altiplano culture, expanding its influence in the Andean area.

    The conquest

    The conquest
    Francisco Pizarro opened the way for the submission of what now is Bolivia. He established The Real Audience of Charcas which was part of the viceroyalty of Perú and englobed all the territory where nowadays Bolivia is settled.

    The Audience of Charcas
    During more than 200 hundred years, the whole Bolivian territory was under the control of The Real audience of Charcas, an institution created by the Spanish King Felipe II.
  • The independency

    The independency
    The Independence of "Alto Peru" was a revolutionary process closely linked to the emergence of the Argentine State and the subsequent independence of Spain. Finally, on August 6, 1825, Bolivia was declared independent under the name of "República de Bolívar" later it was changed to "República de Bolivia" becoming independent from Spain.
  • Consolidation of the republic

    Consolidation of the republic
    The first 50 years of republic were characterized by instability. Simon Bolivar left the presidency and Antonio Jose de Sucre took his place. until 1828 a year full of problems. Since then Bolivia went through a series of battles to defend its territory.
  • The pacific war

    The pacific war
    It was a war against Chile for the rights over the exploitation of Guano and Salitre. It ended up losing the sovereign exit to the sea for Bolivia.
  • Acre war

    Acre war
    It was a conflict between Bolivia and Brasil over some parts of Beni and Pando. Brasil kept an eye on the territory because it was full of natural rubber. In the end, Bolivia gave them all the conflict area.
  • The chaco war

    It was a war between Paraguay and Bolivia. Both countries wanted to have control over the "Chaco Boreal". In 1938 Paraguay gave up 110.000 K2 and both countries signed up a peace treaty.
  • Contemporary era

    Contemporary era
    Between 1952 and 1980 Bolivia went through different kinds of governments. There was a military coup between 1964 and 1982. Hugo Banzer Suarez was an important figure at that time.
  • Democratic governments

    Democratic governments
    Hernan Siles Suazo, Jaime Paz Zamora, and Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada were some presidents during this democratic time. There were some conflicts around this time due to the lack of incompetence to managed out natural resources. The water war was one of them.
  • Evo Morales

    Evo Morales
    In 2006 a new era seems to start. The socialism movement is a political party with new ideas led by Evo Morales. They won the elections and remain in power for more than 10 years.

    The fall of Evo Morales
    There was a huge fraud scandal that compromised the elections and people started to riot calling for new elections. Everything ended with the resignation of Evo Morales. Jeanine Añez took its place as interim president
