    Deficit spending by the government Who? Louis XIV and his heirs What? They put their personal pleasure before serious buisness. Where? France When? 1715-1774 Why? Louis XVI was more consumed with his needs and privileges then the poorest members of the society. How? Louis XVI hired Jacques Necker as his financial expert, who urged the king to reduce the spending, reform government, and end taxes on internal trade.

    Who? Louis XVI What? Louis XVI summoned the Estates General to meet. Where? Versailles When? The following year Why? France was on the verge of bankruptcy, bread riots were spreading, and nobles were denouncing royal tyranny. How? The king contacted the Estates-General and then had all three estates prepare cahiers (notebooks listing their grievances).

    Who? More than 800 Parisians What? The crowd demanded weapons and gunpowder. However, the commander refused and open fired on the crowd. Where? The Bastille When? July 14, 1789 Why? The Parisians were tired of the abuse by the monarchy. How? The Parisians broke through the defenses, killing the commander, five guards, and released the prisoners kept there.

    Who? The National Assembly (Nobles) What? Nobles voted to end their own privileges by giving up their old manorial dues, hunting rights, special legal status, and not paying taxes. Where? During a combative all night meeting When? August 4, 1790 Why? Due to the riots and the storming of the Bastille the nobles knew it was time for change. How? The Nobles abolished Feudalism.

    Who? The working class men and women (sansculottes) pushed the revolution to a more radical point. What? They sansculottes pushed the revolution to a more radical point. Where? France When? October, 1791 Why? The working class men and women couldn't afford daily necessities due to the rapid rise in prices. This led to hoarding and additional food shortages. How? They working class supported radicals in the Legislative assembly, but opposed radicals who wanted more reforms.

August 10, 1792-1793 Why? The townspeople wanted voting to be extended to all male citizens, not just the property owners. They also wanted nobility abolished. How? The townspeople took their freedom into their own hands by killing about 1,200 prisoners accused of political offenses and later executing Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinett.

The revolution and war gave the people pride and support. Knowing their country was on the right path gave them hope. How? By 1793, France was a nation in arms. Nationalism spread throughout the country. Many dances and songs on the revolution became popular.

He conducted hasty, unfair trials and beleived that the death penalty was the only way to assert power Where? France When? September, 1793- July, 1794 Why? He beleived terror was the only was to acheive the goals of the revolution How? Ge arrested about 300,000 people during his reign of terror, about 17,000 of those were executed. Many were packed into prisons were death by disease was common.

Terror and public safety had gotten out of hand How? The moderates developed a fair system of voting, giving men more say in the government.
