    Protest against high taxes that Spain imposed

    Mestizos and Indians marched on Bogotá (Colombia) to protest this. Again, this revolt was crushed by the Spanish and rebel leaders were executed.
  • Revolt against Spanish rule in Peru

    Indian leader Tupac Amaru II led this revolt. Sadly, they were defeated.
  • Haitian slaves revolted

    Haitian slaves murdered their masters and destroyed plantations.
  • Toussaint L'Ouverture leader in struggle for freedom from French

    L'Ouverture was a former slave. By 1801, he had driven the French from Haiti and conquered the Spanish-held part of Hispaniola, declaring it free from foreign control.
  • Dessalines declared Haiti independent

    Haiti was the first independent Latin American nation.
  • Chile won its independence

    Simón Bolívar led his army from Venezuela, over the Andes, to Colombia, where they defeated the Spanish.
