Their capital Constantinople had captured many of groups attention especially the Ottoman Turks, not for the religion but for the gold. The Byzantines were slowly declining finically because of military disasters in their other cities. The Ottoman Turks invaded the captial and won since most of the military wasn't in Constantinople.

Alexios had needed people for protection from the invasion by Selijuk Turks. When they were safe he sent the military to go capture the holy land in Jerusalem to free the western Christians. They didn't complete this until 1099, and that is when the first crusade ended.
