Where a group of self-liberated slaves fought to preserve their freedom and with collaboration with the mullattoes founded the country of Haiti. Haiti received its freedom in 1804. Its Independence was decleared January 1.

    The Latin American Wars for Independence were a turbulent time for these former Spanish colonies. It began when Napoleon Bonaparte dethroned Ferdinand and replaced him with his brother. This lead to a weakening of Spanish power in Latin America and a surge of support for independent republics. Mexico was the first to revolt and attempt to gain their independence, lead by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.

    The movement for Independence was inspired by The Age of Independence. Miguel Hidalgo(a priest) launched the revolution at the town of Dolores, his famous battle cry Gritos de Dolores was said to kick start the actual revolution. He called for the end of 300 years of Spanish rule in Mexico, redistribution of land, and racial equality. In 1821 Mexico received its is Independence. The war ended in the 19th century.

    February 9, 1822, Boyer entered the capital city, Santo Domingo after its independence, where he was met with enthusiasm and received by Nunez de Caceres who offered him the keys of the Palace; Boyer rejected the offer saying: "I have not come into this city as a conqueror but by the will of its inhabitants". Boyer wanted Santo Domingo to unite with Haiti under one government like many other rich families and groups. Santo Domingo united with Haiti.

    In August 1822, Pedro went to São Paulo to pledge loyalty to the Brazilian cause. Upon his return to Rio de Janeiro he was informed all his power was striped of him. That was the last straw he told his friends that they would cut all ties to Portugal.Word of the independent Brazil spread quickly, and locals celebrated the stance taken by Dom Pedro. The official breaking of ties occurred on 22 September 1822, when Pedro wrote a letter to his father, João VI. On 12 October 1822.
