    Marcus Aurelius was the last of the five good emporers of Rome. He ruled form the year 161 C.E. to 180 C.E. He named his son Commodus the next emporer. Marcus Aurelius was a great leader and during his rule culture flourished throughout Rome, and he spent a large portion of his time defending the borders of Rome.

    Diocletian saw that the empire was beginning to decline and he did not want this to happen. He worked to strengthen the empire and so he the empire now had coemporers. The empire was now a tetrarchy and the empire was divided. Maximian took control of the west and Diocletian took control of the east. The west was not as wealthy but Maximian was able to double the size of the military.

    Constantine took over as emperor in 324 C.E. and under his own rule he reunited the east and the west and changed the capital to Byzantium which he named Constantinople. He wanted the capital to be a Christian city. When Constantine died in 337 C.E. the empire was divided again.

Commodus did not worry about crime, and the economy began to weaken, and once the economy is weakened, you won't have money and the militay and so you lose territory.
