Alexius I Asks for Help Regaining Territory
Alexius I, the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, had been losing territory the Muslim Seljuk Turks. Some of this land was considered Holy Land to the Christian faith. Alexius I sent envoys to Pope Urban II asking for soldiers to help reclaim land. -

At the Council of Clermont in Southern France, Pope Urban II accepts the call of Alexius I for soldiers. The Pope calls on Christian soldiers to retake the Holy Land that is being held by Muslims. -

Armies from various parts of Western Europe arrive in Constantinople and most swear loyalty to Alexius I. They prepare to combat the Seljuks and Fatimids to obtain The Holy Land. -

The First Crusade Ends
The crusaders take Jerusalem from the Fatimids, ending the campaign to retake the Holy Land.
