    Carlos IV became king of Spain while the French Revolution was in process and the Napoleonic Empire arose.

    Carlos IV had a minister who was really important but supported Napoleon in a war against Great Britain. In 1805 British defeated French and Spanish forces at the Battle of Traffalgar.

    This Treaty which was signed by Carlos IV and Napoleon I of France gave the Frecnh troops permission to pass through Spain and attack Portugal.

    An spanish war began when the people of Madrid rose up against the French occupation. Two processes were taking place at the same time which were the political revolution and the war itself.

    THE WAR ITSELF

    Spanish forces won some (not many) battles such as the Battle of Bailen.
    Zaragoza and Girona resisted the French for a while but afterall were conquered, and Cadiz was the only city that wasn't conquered.

    POLITICAL REVOLUTION. Two political groups:

    -Joseph Bonaparte was the head of the French government in Spain. He imposed the Bayonne Constitution which had enlightenment reforms for instance guaranteed equality under the law or the pay of taxes. Joseph had spanish supporters called ANFRACESADOS, most people rejected his authority. -Central Council represented the absence of Fernando VII in the areas which were not conquered.
  • Napoleon's Occupation

    Napoleon's Occupation
    After the Treaty the Franch troops started occupping Spain and sent Carlos IV and his son Fernando to Bayonne where they renounced their rights to the Spanish throne in favour of Napoleon, who made his brother Joseph Bonaparte the new King.

    The French were defeated in 1813 with help of the British Duke of Wellington and of the groups of citizens that carried out guerrilla attacks.
