    The Plebeians demanded that all the laws were written down so that the Patricians could not alter them to there advantage. Thus forth, the laws were published on tablets called the Twelve Tables.

    Etruscan Rule

    Etruscan Rule
    Rome was under Etruscan rule from 616 B.C.E. until 509 B.C.E. Throughout this time, the society was divided up into two different social classes. The first were the plebeians; the common people. They were peasants, made up 95% of the population, but had no voice in the government. The others were upper-class citizens called patricians. They came from a small group of wealthy landowners and advised the Etruscan rulers. Also, they held important military and religious positions.

    Plebian Rebellion
    The Conflict of Orders was the quarrel of the two social classes of Rome. The Plebeians were angry over how little power that they had so they rebelled. They marched out of the city and onto a nearby hill where they refused to work. Their actions left Rome in crisis. Without the plebeians Rome could not function, so the patricians had to compromise.

    Equality
    The plebeians now had achieved political equality. The plebeians gained the right to pass laws for all the Roman citizens. Councils made up of all Roman citizens were allowed to approve or reject laws and nominate the consuls. They had fought for 200 years and were now equals to the patricians.

    Creation of the Republic
    A group of patricians, led by Lucius Junius Brutus, rebelled and overthrew the Etruscan rule. In place of the monarchy they created a republic. In this society the patricians had it all working their way. They put most of the power in the hands of the senate, which was a group of 300 patricians that were elected by the patricians. There were two leaders, called consuls, which were Patricians, and they had the control of the army. They had a democracy but only patricians were allowed to part
