Emperors created a period of peace and prosperity known as the Pax Romana (Roman Peace). The Pax Romana lasted for almost 100yrs. Latin was the language of the Western part of the empire. Greek was used in the East. Roman culture spread to all parts of the empire and freely mixed with greek culture.

The early empire was a period of prosperity. Internal peace led tp high levels of trade. Trade went beyond the Roman frontiers as well and included even silk goods from china. Grain was imported to feed the people of Rome. An enormous gulf separated rich and poor in Roman society.

Rome boasted public buildings unequaled anywhere in the empire. The emperors provided food for the city poor. but even than conditions remained grim for the poor.
