Charles' brother, James II, takes the throne. James was very different from his brother. He practiced catholic faith, angered his subjects, suspended laws, and appointed catholics to high office. Many protestants thought that James would restore the Roman Catholic Church.

Parliament leaders invited James' Protestant daughter, Mary, and her dutch protestant husband, William III of Orange. When Mary and WIlliam arrived in England with their army, James II fled to France. This became known as the Glorious Revolution because there was no Blood Shed to overthrow the king.
