    Dictatorship of Primo de Rivera.

    Liberals and Conservatives continued to rule in turn.
    Workers demand better working conditions.
    Spain was involved in military conflicts in its new colonies in Morocco.
    The Constitution was suspended and the king lost most of his powers.
    Political parties were outlawed.
    Freedom of the press was limited through censorship.
    At first, many people supported the Primo de Rivera dictatorship. but later the opposition grew within the army and by Alfonso XIII. Primo de Rivera resigned in 1930.

    The Second Republic

    The Second Republic began in 1931 when Republicans and Socialists won the municipal elections. The monarchy was abolished and Manuel Azaña became president, a new Constitution was drafted and Spain became a democracy, all men and all women were able to vote.

    Francisco Franco did a military rebellion in Morocco because they didn't like the republic government.
    For this reason, Francisco Franco became the Spanish goverment in a dictatorship.

    Spanish Civil War

    Franco and the so called national rebels opposed the changes introduced by the Second Republic. They wanted to replace the government with a right-wing dictatorship. Republicans supported the Second Republic.
    The fight between republicans and nationals lasted until the latter took control of Madrid, the war ended in April 1939 as a result of the victory of the nationals, the Second Franco Republic disappeared and established a right-wing dictatorship.

    Second World War

    In the Second World War, Spain didn't participate because Spain had just been involved in a war the Spanish Civil War that ended in 1939 and Second World War had already started. In any case, Franco helped Hitler because his troops helped win Franco in the Spanish Civil War.

    After the victory of the nationals in the Spanish Civil War, Franco established a dictatorship. He appointed himself head of state, government, and leader of Spain. He take complete control of politics, economics, religion and laws. The Franco dictatorship was based on three pillars:
    The army and the military,
    The Catholic Church and

    The Falange.

    Carrero Blanco was killed by ETA, Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (Basque Country and Freedom). ETA was a terrorist group that wanted the separation of the Basque Country from Spain. This caused the death of many innocent people.

    All the political parties under the supervision of the king decided to change the dictatorship to a democracy.
    Since then, Spain has always been a democracy, this means that it defends the sovereignty of the people and the right of the people to choose and control their rulers.
