    Tension was starting to build up in New Spain, there was social unrest because of many years of social inequality, and besides that, Napoleon had just made his brother the king of Spain which upset many Citizens of the colony. Also, at this time secret meetings held by criollos were happening. To hide this, they often said that they were doing book clubs.

    The secret of the conspiracies that the criollos were having got out to the Peninsulares. They were immediately arrested, keeping any revolt from happening. Allende went to Dolores to tell Hidalgo y Costilla what had happened.

    Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, gathered the people in Dolores and did the iconic Grito de Dolores, leading people to war, marking the beginning of the independence. The Virgen de Guadalupe was very useful for this movement because using that indigenous icon, he led all of the indians and slaves, who in fact were most of the population.

    September 28, 1810
    Led by Miguel Hidalgo, the insurgents were at war with the Spaniards. This date is also when the famous Pipila comes in. When a lot of Spaniards were hidden in the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, Juan José de los Reyes Martínez Amaro (AKA El Pipila), entered that place and burned it down, killing dozens of Spaniards along with himself.

    The Insurgents were victorious against the Spaniards in the Battle of Monte de las Cruces.
  • January 1811

    January 1811
    This was a similar battle, it took place in the outsides of Guadalajara. However, this time the Insurgents were defeated. It was labeled as the Battle of Calederón Bridge.
  • July 31 1811

    July 31 1811
    Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, and Ignacio Allende were both executed by the Spaniards.
  • November 1815

    November 1815
    During this time, the Insurgents were being led by Jose Maria Morelos, however in the Battle of Temalaca, he was killed. This was another battle in which the Spaniards had been victorious.
  • February 24, 1821

    February 24, 1821
    Written by Agustin Iturbide, the Plan de Iguala was finally set to action. The Plan de Iguala consisted of everyone in New Spain to have equal rights regarding race, and for the Roman Catholic religion to be the official religion of the nation.
  • September 1821

    September 1821
    After 11 years, the war was finally over. Iturbide took the place of officially the first emperor in Mexico.
