    more info:Cuban Independence By the end of the 1800s, Spain had lost all of its New World colonies except Cuba and Puerto Rico. Many Cubans did'nt wish to be under Spanish rule, so they fled to Florida and other parts of the U.S.. Jose Marti, a Cuban writer living in New York, and the leader of the revolution, went to the colony to gain the support and liberate Cuba but eventually was killed. Within a few months of the U.S. getting involved Spain signed a peace treaty giving the U.S. control of Cuba and making Cuba free.

    The Monroe Doctrine concentrated on averting Spain from regaining their lost colonies. Peru was free to trade with whoever they wanted to, and the Natives had more power. but were still under the Hacienda system rule. These were the major things happening because of the Monroe Doctrine.

    In LEDCs, urbanisation has been occuring since the 1950's, the reason for this is due to two reasons. Firstly, due to low salaries in rural areas and secondly, a high natural increase in the cities due to the number of young people. The main growth areas in LEDCs have been Sao Paulo in Brazil whose population was 579,000 in 1920 and 20 million in 2000. The growth is exponential.

    1932-1976: Orlando Letelier was a Chilean lawyer, economist, politician and diplomat. After the military takeover of the government in 1973, he became an outspoken critic of the Pinochet regime from exile. Considered a dangerous opponent, Letelier was assassinated by Chilean security forces in Washington, D.C. in 1976.
