    The Regency of Maria Cristina de Habsburgo is the period of the reign of Alfonso XIII of Spain in which due to the minority of aged OF king Alfonso XIII the head of the State was played by its mother Maria Cristina de Habsburgo-Lorena. The regency begins in November of 1885 when King Alfonso XII passes away, months before Alfonso XIII was born, and ends in May of 1902 when Alfonso XIII turns sixteen years old and swears the Constitution of 1876, bigining its personal reign

    The “Regeneracionismo” is a movement leaded by Joaquín Costa, that emerged after Spain lost its last colonies in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Philippines, by 1900. The purpose of it was trying to improve all the infrastructures of the country, and to expand the culture, like a solution of the huge crisis that Spain was living. It was backed up by a lot of authors of the “La Generación 98”, who were very important in the Spanish literature.

    The coup d'etat of Primo de Rivera took place in Spain 13 and 15 of September of 1923 and it was headed by the General Primo de Rivera. This event resulted in the establishment of the dictatorship id Primo de Rivera thanks to Alfonso XIII did not oppose the coup. In mid-1931, Primo de Rivera resigned from power. Alfonso XIII calls elections to regain power but the problem was that the people voted in favor of the republic.

    The II Spanish Republic was proclaimed the 14 of April of 1931, replacing to the constitutional monarchy of Alfonso XIII of Bourbon and presided by Niceto Alcalá-Zamora. There were a series of events that caused this change. The first city in which it was proclaimed was Eibar, and from there it was extended to the rest of Spain.
