Once everything was failing and prices were increasing, the government went into debt. This was unfortunate because it affected all the people of France. Bankers also refused to lend the government money.

This hurt the economy especially the farmers because when their crops failed and they could not sell them, they could not afford bread. The women became very angry with the fact that the price of bread continued to rise so they rioted. They thought as though it was not fair that when they were struggling with money that the prices were still rising. They demanded that the National Assembly provided bread for them.
