    Uruguayan Revolt Against the Spanish
    Led by national hero Jose Gervasio Artigas, Uruguay succssesfully revolted against the Spanish rule and formed the Liga Federal which was led by Artigas. The Liga Federal was a federalist state that would be attacked and eventually annexed by the Portuguese with Brazil

    Paraguayan Independence
    Paraguay was located on the outskirts of Rio de la Plata, an area in southern South America under Jose de San Martin. Since Rio de la Plata was pushing for freedom of trade, they opted for autonomy. Although the myth of independence and autonomy being equivalent was preserved for a while in this situation, after three years of Paraguay being under Rio de la Plata’s autonomy and then proceeding in winning a battle against Argentina, they declared independence in 1813.

    Brazilian Independence Movement
    This movement was fueled by the Prince Dom Pedro who was a member of the Portugese royal family. He lived in Brazil and while the Portugese were focused with fending off Napoleon, Pedro, with supporters, felt Brazil deserved more than just a colony status. He issued the Grito do Ipiranga on this day to officially seperate Brazil from Portugal. The revolution was nearly bloodless except for a few skirmishes.

    From 1809-1825 there was a long struggle for independence from Spain. Revolutionary simon bolivar helped out and allied with the nativs to take over Northern Bolivia. From there they headed South and little by little they managed to take over more and more land. It was all kept together by 6 guerilla bands in the North that would refuse to surender.

    Uruguay Declares Independence From Brazil
    After being annexed by Brazil, Uruguay begins to try and gain independence with the Thirty-Three Oreintals movement led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja. The independence movement was supported by Argentina, greatly angering Brazil. After Uruguay declared indepence on August 25, 1825, a war broke out between Brazil and Argentina over involvement in Uruguay. This war was resolved in 1828 with the treaty of Montevideo, from which Uruguay emerged as an independent state.

    Two years after successfully gaining independence from Spain and Portugal, Uruguay adopted its first constitution. The constitution was heavily influenced by American and French revolutions in terms of forming branches of government and dividing powers.

    War of the Triple Alliance
    The War of the Triple Alliance was between Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay against Paraguay. The war was caused by many disputes, most being about land and tariff distribution. This long lasting conflict had a huge impact on Paraguay, killing the majority of its male inhabitants. It was believed that the Paraguayan military vastly out numbered the other three, but since there were so many people in the military, there was not enough sufficient training.
