Montag meets his seventeen year old neighbor named Clarisse. Clarisse asks Montag if he is happy, sparking the questions and doubts Montag begins to have about life.

Montag's wife, Mildred, overdoses. This reinforces Montag's idea that people aren't really happy.

Montag and his fellow firemen are sent to burn down the house of an old woman. The woman refuses to leave the house so she is burned along with all of her books except the one Montag secretly takes home.

Montag comes home from the old woman's house and feels sick over what happened. Mildred tells Montag about Clarisse's death, making Montag even sicker.

Beatty, Montag's boss, visits Montag at home while he is sick. He reminds him that all firemen feel skeptical about their work at some point. Beatty also says if Montag has a book he needs to burn it within 24 hours.

Montag meets Faber, an old English professor. Faber encourages Montag in his reading and teaches him about the importance of reading. Together they decide to try and sabotage the firemen.

Montag reads to his wife and two of her friends. He is eventually exposed for his reading crimes and forced to burn down his house.

Montag kills Beatty with a flamethrower. The Mechanical Hounds are sent on Montag and he is forced to flee for his life.

After fleeing the city Montag runs into a group of men called the "Book Covers". They have memorized books and are waiting to help rebuild the future.
