  • Costa Rica declares independence

    After the Spanish Mexican war Costa Rica declares independence although it is not officially recognized as its own country by Spain

  • First civil war of Costa Rica

    Split by political parties to whether they should join Mexico or be independent Costa Rica had their first Civil war.

  • Costa Rica leaves the Republic of Central America and Declares itself a sovereign Nation

    They chose to leave even though the republic no longer functions

  • Present day

    After the second regime was overthrown the military was abolished and Costa Rica became a democracy following the creation of a new constitution

  • Summary

    Costa Rica has had a relative peaceful history in the last century although it has been through two violent regimes
