In 1627 to 1631 Belize and the Yucatan suffered a major famine when a plauge of locusts swarmed into Belize. The Belizean crops suffered great shortfalls because of the locusts destroying crops. The Mayan Belizeans fled to the rain forests in search of food and to escape from the Spanish rule. Many people died of starvation during the famine. The famine ended in 1631. This event is important to the history of Belize because the famine made a large amount of Mayan Belizeans die of starvation.

The famine also caused Mayans to flee from their Spanish controlled cities which increased the tension between the Maya and the Spainards that would eventually lead to a war. Locust
