    Pompey was back in Rome, while Caesar commanded an amry in the north of Italy across the Rubicon River. Both Pompey and Caesar wanted to control Rome but Pompey had the support of the Roman Senate. The Roman the Senate forbid Caesar to enter Italy with his army. Caesar disobeyed the senate and crossed the Rubicon River with his army. After five years of fighting Caesar finally defeated Pompey and the senate names him dictator for life.

    Caesar had a vision of Rome as a great empire. He started new colonies and granted citizenship to the people of cities in Gaul and Spain. Caesar did not live to see his vision come true. On March 15, 44 B.C.E. Caesar was stabbed to death as he was entering the Senate.

    Constantine had a vision of a cross hanging in the sky and around the cross was a sign that stated: "In this sign, you will conquer." Later that night he had a dream about Jesus and the emperor interpreted that his dream meant that if he accepted Christian beliefs he would win the war. Constantine's soldiers went into war with the first two letters of the word Christ. Rome won a great victory and from that moment on Constantine favored the Christian God. It became the offical relgion in 380 C.E.
