    •American colonists were angry about the taxes Britain put on their goods to pay for Britain’s debts from the Seven Years War. Colonists were angry because they were only ever ignored by Parliament when they tried to explain what they wanted

    Aggressor: British Parliament
    •The colonists eventually gained freedom but only after opposing other actions Parliament did and after a long war
  • The French Revolution

    French Revolution

    •Third Estate were forced to pay debts from the Seven Years War, and people were angry that higher classes didn’t have to pay taxes. The king couldn’t lift the taxes, so they revolted since their natural rights weren’t protected
    •Mainly in Dourdan, France
    •Victims: the French people in the Third Estate
    Aggressor: the government.
    •Revolution was longer, deadlier, and had a worse outcome than the American Revolution, but it was successful in replacing France’s monarch with a National Assembly.
  • Saint Domingue Resistance

    Saint Domingue Resistance

    •All of the people who weren’t slaves were fighting to be able to have the same rights as regular Frenchmen because it was only whites at the time
    •Happened in Saint Domingue (present-day Haiti)
    •Victim: non-slaves in Saint Domingue
    Aggressor: National Assembly of the French Revolution
    •The resistance was very successful with granting people more rights, and this revolution inspired people in other areas of the world to fight for more rights.
  • Mexican Resistance

    Mexican Resistance

    •Mexicans were angry with Spain’s unfair taxation and their oppressive rule, especially over people of mixed heritage known as mestizos
    •Happened in Mexico
    •Victim: The Mexicans, especially of mixed heritage
    Aggressor: Spanish government
    •This revolution was unsuccessful, but the ideas of the leader Father Hidalgo caused more resistance later on in Mexico and they won independence from Spain in 1821

    Indian Resistance

    •During the British Raj, Indian resisted politically because they wanted to be free from the British government’s rule
    •Occurred in India
    •Victim: Indians
    Aggressor: British government
    •Some members of the Indian National Congress had a huge impact on India and showed them how to peacefully resist, but India wasn’t successful with this until they gained independence from the British in 1947
  • Philippine War of Independence

    Philippine War of Independence

    •The U.S. had just taken territories after the Spanish-American war and Filipinos did not want their land taken so they revolted in a war against the Americans.
    •Happened in the Philippines
    •Victim: Filipinos
    Aggressor: Americans
    •The revolt was unsuccessful as it took the lives of nearly four times more Filipinos than Americans and many of the Filipino people died from famine and starvation. The U.S. had control of the Philippines until 1946.
