    This was the first time that Canadians made their own declaration of war as a sovereign nation. Once war was declared prepared their costal defences and mobilized their armed forces. Over one millions contributed to the war, about 45,000 lost their lives.

    Canada sent 1975 troops to try and help defend Hong Kong. Many of the Canadians were not fully equiped nor were they fully trained. Hong Kong surrendured on Christmas Day in 1941. Of the 1975 sent Canadians, 290 were killed and 493 wounded. The Canadians showed a lot of bravery going in to a battle with not fully trained troops.

    The 1st Canadian Infantry Division and the 1st Canadian Army Tank Brigade were chosen to operate in Operation HUSKY. Canada's successes were described as brilliant.

    Out of the 150,000 Allied troops 14,000 were Canadians. The Royal Canadian Navy helped achieve this victory with 110 ships and 10,000 sailors. Canadians helped achieve the victory but 359 were killed in the process with 1074 casualties.

    During the Battle of Scheldt the first Canadian army led the way to clear the Germans from the shores of Scheldt. This became a key step to the liberation of northwest Europe and the end of the war.
