    In 1929, the Canadian stock market had crashed and the Great Depression had started. The unemployment rates in Canada were sky high as most companies had to lay off workers.
  • Richard Bedford Bennett

    Richard Bedford Bennett
    Richard was prime minister of Canada through 1930 to 1935. Richard felt he knew how to end the Great Depression. He set up relief camps for the unemployed, which ended poorly as men got frustrated by the low pay. When citizens mailed him asking for help he would always do his best even try to pay out of him own pocket. But by the time of the next election we lost to the king and liberal party.
  • Cairine Wilson

     Cairine Wilson
    Cairine was Canada's first woman senator. She was the first because in previous lower court rulings other women were not considered full "persons." This was a big stride for women in Canada during this time period and allowed women to feel as if they were indeed "person."
  • The holocaust

    The holocaust
    Around 1933, about 800 000 Jew people fled looking for a new home away from nazi Germany. Canada was alarmed by the flood of Jewish refugees and refused to let any stay. During WWII Canada only let in little under 4000 Jews into the country. Canada had made a grave mistake by not allowing more people to stay which would of lowered the death count by nazi Germany.

    Dieppe
    troops of the Canadian 2nd Division formed the bulk of the Dieppe Raid. Of the 5,000 Canadians who took part, only about 2,000 returned to England. Nearly 1,000 had been killed and 2,000 taken prisoner. A further 500 Canadians lost their lives.
  • Normandy

    Normandy
    The Allied invasion force, the Canadians played an important role in the battle to take Caen. They then advanced along the French seacoast to the Pas-de-Calais and took Dieppe on 1st September. Canadians fought with British soldiers in the freeing of the Scheldt Estuary and success.
  • Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF)

    Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF)
    Although a major task of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) based at home was the hunting of U-Boats in the North Atlantic, its most important area of operations was Europe, where 48 Canadian squadrons served. Canadian airmen fought in the Battle of Britain, North Africa, Italy and the Normandy invasion. About 17,000 died, the great majority while serving with Bomber Command.
