Soldiers in WW1 were never taken care of properly, so when they returned from war, they spread the Spanish Flu to the whole country. This flu killed 50 000 people in Canada, all because the military was never taken care of enough, even though they were literally risking their lives by fighting in a war. I would give this event a -2 rating because this illness wiped out so many people, and public health authorities/government never put any significant health measures in place to prevent it. -
Society decided that alcohol was responsible for all of its issues, which was very wrong, but they believed it anyway, so one day the government decided: "hey let's ban drinking for everyone & see how it goes!", 'cause of this, people started buying and selling dangerous alcohol off the streets, and people would fake illness to get prescriptions. However, alcohol-related crime rates dropped significantly.
I give this a 0 because it had negative impacts, but also had a lot of positive impacts. -
A group of painters identifies themselves as a "landscape school". The group of seven was a group of Candian painters who painted Candian landscapes, their paintings were known for their bright colours and great detail. I give this a 0 because I don't think this really showed progress or decline for Canada. -
Cow and Pig pancreases were suddenly proven useful when scientist Frederick G. Banting discovered Insulin. Until the 1980s, animal insulin was the only type available, nowadays human insulin has been largely popularized, however, animal insulin is still available. I give this event a 1 rating because while it was a huge scientific discovery for Canada, and helped a huge number of people, they're still actively taking cells from living animals/beings. -
Canada decided they hated Chinese people, what a shock! The Chinese Immigration act or the Chinese Exclusion act basically banned Chinese people from coming into the country unless they were merchants, students, diplomats, or Canadian-born Chinese returning from school in China. I give this a -2 because this proves that the Canadian government was extremely racist, and liked making everyone's lives miserable if they weren't white. -
Canada finally signed something for themselves without mommy Britain holding their hand and doing it for them. Before this, Canada always depended on the British government to negotiate and sign things for them, but this time the PM decided he would do it himself. I give this a 2 because this was a signal of Canada starting to be independent, and showing that they can make decisions, etc. by themselves and they didn't need Britain to do everything on their behalf. -
The KKK advertised themselves as a "social organization" and planted their national headquarters in Toronto in 1925 when in reality they were barely a "social organization", they were just a bunch of primarily male racists, who wanted to make people with darker skin have miserable lives for no good reason. I give this event a -2 rating because even though this was "normal" during that time, this should have never been societally accepted or normalized, it is incredibly offensive and racist. -
The supreme court is misogynistic, what a shock! The Person's Case is when the supreme court decided that the word "person" didn't include women, so women weren't people. The word "persons" is used when referring to multiple people, but when you were referring to a singular person, you only use "he", which insinuates that women aren't people. I give this a -2 rating because even though during those times society was very against women, declaring that they aren't people is still too far. -
Black Tuesday was the start of the Great Depression, when New York's stock mark plummeted quite dramatically, and caused annoyance and problems everywhere else. I give this event a -2 because it put Canada into a very very dark time socially and economically, the ten years of depression that stemmed from it left millions of people, and families without houses, clothes, food or water, or money at all. -
The stock market has crashed dramatically and everyone is broke. Great! This is fine. The start of the great depression was terrible because it left families without homes, food, water, jobs, or any other necessities for life. I give this a -2 rating because this was a very dark time for Canada, socially and economically.
