    As the dominion of Great Britain, Canada automatically found itself in the war when Britain declared war on Germany. Little did Canadians know at that time, they would be paying heavy prices for the war. Young Canadian men were slaughtered on the battlefields as they lined up to join the war for glory and honor. Canada would be deprived of resources to meet the war effort.

  • Battle of Second Ypres

    Battle of Second Ypres

    During the battle of Second Ypres, Canadian soldiers experienced terrible mustard gas (chlorine gas) attacks from the German soldiers. Many Canadian soldiers suffered and died painfully from the poisonous gas attack. Despite their horrendous condition, Canadian soldiers held their position and pushed oncoming Germans back.

    Manitoba Women Get Provincial Vote

    Manitoba became the first province that gave Canadian women the right to vote at the provincial level. This proved to be significant politically and socially as it showed signs of progress and improvement in gender equality in Canada.

    Canada's economy was in huge debt as the government poured millions of dollars to support the war effort. To bring Canada out of its debt state, the government turned to its people for help. Many measures were introduced to help fund the war, including the introduction of income tax.

    British Columbia Women Get Provincial Vote

    British Columbia became the third province to give women the right to vote at the provincial level. However, it should be noted that British Columbia didn't give this right to Asian and Indigenous women.

    Battle of Vimy Ridge

    Four Canadian divisions along with one British brigade captured Vimy Ridge from the German army. The capture of Vimy Ridge was the biggest territorial advance that the Allied forces had made up to that point and would later become the most celebrated Canadian victory. Although Canada suffered losses (more than 10,600 dead or wounded or captured), it was a brilliant victory on Canada's side.

    Conscription in Place

    Prime Minister Borden introduced conscription to the parliament as a solution to Canada needing more men to fight in the war. Eventually, the Military Service Act (conscription) was passed by the parliament and Canadian men up to the age of 48 were to enlist in the military. Borden's decision to pass the conscription worsened the relationships between the French Canadians and the English Canadians.

    Wartime Elections Act

    Borden and their government convinced the parliament to pass the Wartime Elections Act. This meant that women in the armed forces of Canada and female relatives of men serving in Canada's military have the right to vote at the federal level. However, at the same time, vote rights were taken from "enemy aliens".     Influenza, also known as the Spanish flu, put Canada in a deadly pandemic when Canadian soldiers brought it with them when they returned home. Sometime between 1918 and 1920, Influenza killed around 50,000 Canadians. Different waves of Spanish flu came to Canada as more and more soldiers returned home.

    With the armistice, the long and dreaded World War 1 finally came to an end. Around 425,000 Canadian soldiers were sent overseas to fight on the western fronts. But only 365,000 returned home. Despite the losses, Canada came out of the war victorious. Many celebrated as they welcomed the returning soldiers.

    Treaty of Versailles Signed

    The Treaty of Versailles, peace settlements, and rules forced on Germany were signed to prevent another world war. Unfortunately, this Treaty of Versailles would spark World War 2. Canada had the honor of getting a seat in the conference as well as a separate signature on the treaty. Canada became a force to be reckoned with.

    Great Depression caused millions to be left unemployed, hungry, and homeless. The introduction of the credit system led to overproduction and when the overproduction slowed down, people had less money to spend so the worth of money decreased. Many people were laid off and now they couldn't pay the credits back.
