Timeline to the Glorious Revolution and a Limited Monarchy

    Charles I
    Parliament forced Charles To agree to the Petition of Right, preventing Charles from forcing loans or taxation as well as not quatering soldiers in private homes. The Parliament in this instance has already begun to undermine the absolute power of the monarchs by forcing them to submit to their ideas or else have their funds removed.     English Civil War

    The English Civil war created a huge division between the old government and new by completly getting rid of the Monarch Charles I in replacement for one ruled through a Republic. This was England's first attempt at a government without a powerful king at its head controlling it.
  • Oliver Cromwell

    Oliver Cromwell
    When Oliver Cromwell took charge of England after the civil war, he demonstrated that the king could be silenced and government ruled by the Parliament, giving rise to the idea that England did not need Absolutism, but could survive on its own.     Enforcment of Test Act
    The Test Acts were forced upon Charles II to prevent Catholics from attaining positions of power. When James II took power, he immediatly revoked the act and shocked Parliament, causing it to be upset at him and his use of his power.     James II
    When James disbanded Parliament at the beggining of his rule, he caused a stir among the nobles that made up the Parliament, fearing that he would use the power soley to his advantage and not to help his people. This inspired some of Parliaments members to form a plan to remove James from the throne in order to weaken monarchy as a whole and have the Parliamentary republic be in control of the government instead of an absolute ruler.   • Birth of James Francis Edward

    Birth of James Francis Edward
    With the birth of a Catholic heir to the throne, the Parliament realized it would lose much of its power over the monarchy. This was a tipping point for the Parliament who felt they could regain control with a Protestant Queen. The birth led to the invitation of William of Orange to invade England to attain the throne.     William of Orange
    When it was found that James II's heir would be Catholic, Parliament stepped in and invited William to invade England as the rightful ruler and assume his position on the throne under the complete authority of the Parliament.
