In this period in the french revolution, people like Maximilien de Robespierre were inforcing the revolution with daily execution of traitors. They used the guillotine to exectute over a thousand people in the time less than a year that this period lasted. It ended when Robespierre told the council that he had a new list of names to execute, as to be like scaring them straight or to warn them, and because of everyone in the council afraid to be killed, they all voted Robespierre a traitor.
