    The Estates-General, a group composed of three estates (clergy, nobles, and commonners) meets to discuus financial problems with King Louis XVI
  • National Assembly Established

    THe Third Estate creates an assembly known as the National Assembly.
  • Tennis Court Oath

    Tennis Court Oath
    When King Louis XVI closes down the National Assembly's original meeting place, they move the assembly to a tennis court and swears that they won't disband until they give France a new constitution, which would be called the Tennis Court Oath
  • Storming of the Bastille

    Storming of the Bastille
    Peasants storm the Bastille fortress, a symbol of royalty, and steal weapons and ammunition. The Governor was killed during the storming, and the violence caused King Louis XVI to back down and Marquis de la Lafayette appointed National Guard.
  • National Constituent Assembly Publishes Declaration

    On August 4, the Assembly, which was made from the National Assembly, abolished feudalism, which was the system used in the Middle Ages, and on the 26th published a Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. NEcker, the king's former financial advisor, was given complete ownership of the economy.
  • Women's March On Versailles

    Women's March On Versailles
    Approximately 7,000 women marched to Versailles stormed the king's palace as a result of bread shortage, which forced King Louis XVI to flee to Paris under the guidance and protection of Marquis de la Lafayette.
  • Religious Matters Dissolved

    Religious Matters Dissolved
    Monks and nuns are able to go back to private life- all religious matters are dissolved.
  • Flight to Varennes

    The royal family is caught in an attempt to flee Paris dressed as servants.

    After completing the Constitution of 1791, the National Assembly disbands.

    France declares war on Austria to help the Revolution and increase popularity for the king.

    Mobs break into prisons, kill approx. 2,000 people
  • Republic declared

    The Convention abolishes monarchy, France becomes a republic

    King Louis XVI is executed by guillotine- more countries fight against revolutionary France

    A period of time when the Jacobins ruled, and approximately 40,000 people died either based off execution or death while awaiting trial
  • New Constitution is Approved

    A new constitution is approved called the Directory
  • NApoleon takes over

    Napoleon Bonaparte overtakes the Directory and five years later declares himself emperor.
