Single cell multiplies into more than 100 cells that eventually form both placenta and embryo; travel down fallopian tube and implanted into uterus. -
Prenatal Development & Birth: Embryonic Period
Third through the eighth week after conception.
The heart begins to beat, and the eyes, ears, and mouth form. By the eighth week, basic organs and features present with the exception of sex organs. -
Prenatal Development & Birth: Fetal Period
Extends from the ninth week until birth.
Sexual organs develop; all organs and body structures have formed; brain begins to regulate basic body functions. -
