Lajos Sabo was born in Ujvidek, Hungary in August 5th 1928, in a Hungarian family, under the rule of King Horty Miklos.

In 1929 Ujvidek became Novi-Sad, in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

He was 11 years old when WWII started in 1939. He remembers hiding in bunkers underground during bombings and he watched fighter planes fly over him.

My grandfather had worked from a young age. He was 17 years old when WWII ended in 1945.

In 1946 The Kingdom of Yugoslavia became the Federal Peoples Republic of Yugoslavia, and in 1963 it became Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

In Canada in the 1950’s they were accepting unskilled agricultural, rurally based laborers mostly as immigrants.

In the 1960’s because of their foreign trade policies Yugoslavia fell into a recession.

There was rising unemployment, price increases, and income disparity that continued into the 1970’s, despite allowing foreign investment to boost their economy.

In 1965 the Yugoslavian government opened emigration laws, allowing freedom to leave that did not exist before.

In 1967 Canada removed racial and geographic discrimination from their immigration policies.

In 1970 he immigrated to Toronto, Canada. His aunt, his mother’s sister lived here, and many friends he grew up with in Novi-Sad, Yugoslavia.

During the 1970’s while living in Toronto local and world events taking place affected all of our lives. Apollo 11, 14, 16, 17, were missions that landed on the moon (1969-1972).

In 1973 oil crisis affected us in Canada, and the rest of the world. The six month embargo placed on exports by the Arab petroleum extorting countries has had a massive effect on the US and Canada infrastructure.
