    Brunswick Manifesto issued
    It was a document written by émigrés that said that the French monarchy was being brutalized and that the National Assembly had declared unjust war on Austira. Prussia and Austria’s intended to end anarchy, and "restore to the king the security and liberty of which he is now deprived and to place him in a position to exercise once more the legitimate authority which belongs to him," and secure the safety of the Church.

    Storming of the Tuileries
    The French people had heard rumours that Louis was trying pave way for French defeat so that in a defeat, he could take back his power as king which led to a French mob strorming the Tuilries Palace, and overthrowing the king and his family.
  • Beginning of the September Massacres

    Beginning of the September Massacres
    After the storming of the Tuileries, on September 2 1792, George Danton delivered a patriotic speech that called for the death of all traitors to the French Republic. Later that day, a mob attacked some prisoners who were being transferred to the Abbaye prison. For the next four days, the same things were happening to other prisons where people were condemned by the court and then executed. Nearly 1000 and 1400 people were killed.

    National Convention and Constitution of 1793

    After they overthrew the monarchy, they wanted to create a constituion for France. This was one of the main purposes for the National Convention. It required the vote of two thirds of the members to a new legilative committee.

    Reign of Terror

    The French government was struggling with civil and international wars so they took great measures against those thougt to be enemies of the revolution. Thousands were killed in this around one year time span. By the end, there were at least 300,000 people suspected of being enemies of the revolution and put in jail, 17,000 executed, and thousands died in jail without a proper trial.

    Louis XVI Execution
    The National Convention put Louis XVI on trial for the crime of counterrevolution. He was found guilty with a vote of 387 to 334. They sentenced him to death by guillotine and he was excuted in front of a huge crowd on January 21, 1793.

    Committee of Public Safety

    When the government declared war on Britain, military matters were handled by the Committee of General Defence which suggested to have the Committee of Public Safety. The Committee of Public Saefty took care of the conduct of war, economic policy, supervision of government agencies, and enforced the law.
  • Dechristianization

    Dechristianization
    The National Convention initiated the Cult of Supreme Being, which was the epitomy of the forced Dechristianization that was ocuring during this time period.
  • Thermidorian Reaction

    Thermidorian Reaction
    Robespierre and his friends in the Convention of Public Safety were executed and their powers were taken away. People had lived in fear while they ruled, which is why it was called the Reign of Terror. The Thermidorian Reaction brought an end to the Reign of Terror
