Iroquois:
- Matriarch, semi-nomadic (sedimentary), agriculture, fished, some hunting, great warriors, long houses. -
Explored and mapped the Gulf of St-Lawrence, reported what he thought was gold but it was lots of fish, timber and furs.

Sailed up the St.-Lawrence, reached Stadacone (Quebec). Nice natives showed Europeans how to survive the winter and scurvy. They return with native captives.

Attemped to set up a colony, yet it was not successful. Missionaires attempted to convert natives. France lost interest for 60 years.

Mid 1500's..
The Europeans were looking for a way to India.
Merchants --> wanted to sell goods, and new trade routsetc.
Scholars --> learn and discover
Clegy --> increase believers
Super Power Countires --> more territory and possible resources. -
Around late 1500's or early 1600..
-Natives taught the Europeans new methods, like corn, tobacco.
-Natives taught them how to survive the winter, ice fishing, tricks about animals.
-Europeans gave them guns.
-Also thaught them religion.
-Native taught the Europeans canoes, snow shoes.
-Europeans brought in alcohol. -
The king first sent a voyage to establish a settlement in Nova Scotia called Port Royal. (failed colony)

1608, Champlain returned to establish a trading post near Stadacona a point where the river narrows.

Around 1630's fur was being over used and was becoming scarce and New France was forced to expand its territory.

Around the 1630's...
Jeanne Mance sets up the first hospital (Hotel Dieu de Montreal). -
At first the main export back to France was fish, but this was quickly replaced by Furs because the beaver pelt was perfect for making felt (especially wide brim felt hats, popular among men).

Established Montreal, it's deep inside Iroquois territory, stablished to try and convert natives. It's called Ville-Marie.
