  • My Birth

    I was born on July 4th, 1989 in Saudi Arabia. I was born in King Abdullah Hospital. I was born with jaundice, so I was placed in the ICU inside an incubator for the first few days of my life, until my liver could develop further.

  • The First Two years- Biosocial

    I was around 18 months old when I took my first steps. My parents tell me, I took my first steps from the coach to the TV in our living room. This was one of the biosocial learning points in my first two years of life.

    When I travel to India that summer, I went with my mother and older brother. It was my first time leaving my father, and my mother would say I would cry when I would see my dad’s picture. But when he arrived a few days later, I stopped my tantrums. I think this is an example of psychosocial skill I learned during my first two years when I showed that I missed someone close to me, I missed their presence.

    During my first trip to India, my family and I stayed at my grandparent’s house. It was during this time I learned the difference between family vs. strangers. My father would tell me, that the first time I met my grandfather I would cry a lot. My father’s theory was my grandfather’s long bread had scared me, and the fact that it was my first time seeing him. But I quickly learned that my grandfather was someone I could trust after living within him for a couple of days. This is an example of c

    In Saudi Arabia the school year starts in May. It was that spring that I was old enough to be left alone and attend school by myself. I was at this age completely in control on my bowel movements and could ask for help when I needed to use the bathroom. This is a biosocial development I learned during early childhood.

    At preschool I developed many of my cognitive abilities. I learned the difference between paint colors, how to hold a pencil and write letters. But at this age I still didn’t understand the danger. One day after preschool, I decided I get off a different bus stop with my friend and go over to her house. My parents still tell me this story, of how afraid they were when they realized I wasn’t on the bus. They called the school and lucky my best friend was also my parent’s closest friends. So when

    When I was at preschool I learned the difference between individualism and interpersonal relationships. I learned to play with others, share and go on play dates. I would have to learn how play fair, and how to resolve problems with people my own age. I learned difference between tattle tailing and seeking help.

    I moved to the United States of America. I learned a new culture and had to make new friends. I developed biosocial ability, to learn to adapt to new environment, cognitive, understanding a new language and psychosocial the culture differences between Saudi Arabia and the USA.

    I lived in a women’s shelter with my mother. My family; my mother, older brother and I moved back to the USA. We didn’t have much money and didn’t have a place to stay so we moved into a shelter. This was the first time I experienced homelessness. I learned about family domestic violence, how to control stress and how to find other means to express feelings.

    I went to many family court hearings and my father moved back to the USA and won custody of us. This was the first time I was separated from my mother. We would visit her every weekend. I had a hard time making friends, attending school during the first year. It was the first time I saw my mother work, she worked as a maid.     My first time being aware of the outside world, it was my first time paying attention to global issues. I was experiencing identity conflict; I didn’t understand the people on the TV that referred to themselves as Muslims. It was the first time I learned words like jihad, terrorism. I spoke a lot with my parents about religion and start developing spiritually because of it.

    I received my first valentine present from a boy. I was developing cognitively during middle childhood by developing feelings for the opposite gender. I was redefining what a friendship with the opposite gender was.

    I got my first period. This was a biosocial development that occurred during my middle childhood where I was developing more female features such as breasts and widening of the hips. I was experiencing many hormonal differences such as an increase in estrogen levels in my body.

    This was my first time being asked out by someone. We went to the movies and then to the arcade. This was a new psychosocial experience, where I was learning new etiquettes of how be with someone in a new setting.

    The first time I would start going with my mother to the salon. My body was developing and I was learning ways to take better care of myself hygienically. This was biosocial development seen during my adolescence.

    I was developing new cognitive abilities during my adolescent years such as critical thinking skills. This was this year I took classes such as algebra and physics, classes that required abstract thinking.

    A new member was added to the family. My half brother was born. Learning the role of not being the youngest in the family. Identity role swtich.

    I learned to drive and had my own car. This was a big psychosocial learning experience because it was my first time I was hanging out with my friends outside of school. I was learning new things like how to balance a savings account, save up money for gas and balancing social and school.

    I started wearing a hijab. This was my first time making a decision based on standing up for my faith. I wanted to wear a hijab and show what it means to be a Muslim, so when people meet me I can disprove what the media says about Muslim women or Islam. It was my way to take a political stand on the issue of Islam and terrorism and being an American.

    At age 21, my body has reached full development. My brain has fully grown and I can now comprehend all my actions and understand how each action has a consequence and affects my future. This was a huge biosocial development seen in my emerging adulthood years.

    My mother graduated from nursing school and became a nurse.

    I graduated from nursing school, it was this day I took my oath to do everything I can as a nurse to help my patients. I had developed many skills and critical thinking abilities during nursing school. These are examples of how I have cognitively grown in my emerging adulthood years.

    I was hired for my first job as a Licensed Practical Nurse. It was the first time I needed to learn how to be a manger, and advocate and team member while performing my task as a nurse. I was learning the psychosocial skills as how to interact in healthcare system.

    Making my first big purchase. I bough a white 2012 Nissan Altima for my mother. It was my first itme I felt I was able to give back to my mother

    Dealing for the first time my patient passing away. It was very traumatic having to deal with to start CPR, and when it was announced that the pt passed away, reflecting on if I had done everything to help the pt.

    At age 35, I will have to many biological differences. I will need to learn how to cope with illness such as diabetes and hypertension. Since both are found in my family, I need to be proactive to prevent this from occurring.

    At age 40, I see myself balancing between parenthood and being a caregiver to my parents. I would be learning to balance my time and resources between both parties. I would be developing cognitively on ways to time manage, being the power of attorney for my parents regarding the health decisions.

    I would be attending the high school graduation of my children. I would be developing psychosocial skills such as how to cope with empty nest syndrome.

    My body would be going through the normal biological changes seen with aging, like muscle weakness, bone density loss, decreased thyroid function. This is an example of biosocial changes seen in late adulthood.

    I plan to retire from nursing and learn different cognitive functions on how to cope with retirement and finding new hobbies and redefining self.

    I would like to learn psychosocial skills like being involved in recreational activities, volunteering my time in shelters and with the Red Cross.
