Indian Act (Social, -1)

1920

The Indian Act was destructive because there was more restriction with compulsory residential schools and the sun dance, prohibition to raising or hiring lawyers to pursue land claims, allowing them to vote in exchange for their rights, and more. This affects their culture, rights, freedom, land, and lasting to the present world today.

Flappers (Social, +1)

1920

This shows it was advantageous since the “flappers’ craze” gave women independence through being unnormal, pushing barriers in economic, political, and sexual freedom. They did this by defying their usual image like drinking heavily, smoking, shocking dances, took over jobs, crazy fashion, and more.

Beginning of Branch Plants (Economic, +1)

1920

This is virtuous for Canada because branch plants were copies of American parent companies located in Canada. Companies could avoid paying taxes/tariffs at the border while being providing job and training opportunities with new technology in Canada.

Inventions (economic, +1)

1924

This is beneficial since new inventions were important. Notably, the Ford Model T was the most affordable car, $395 in 1924. Other important inventions during the time were insulin and penicillin supported the health sector and people, the radio created job opportunities and helped in the entertainment sector, the refrigerator helps people, and more.

The Great Depression (Economic, -2)

1929

This is harmful to Canada because overexpansion, overproduction, dependence on wheat and the U.S, credit buying, and more lead to Stock Market Crash. This negatively affected the population since people could not afford to buy clothes, food, and other merchandise, companies shutting down, people being unemployed, their houses repossessed from being unable to pay back, and more.

The Drought (Economic, -1)

1929

The drought in the prairies devastated Canada because the government policies, programs and farming practices helped result in the drought. Some 7.3 million hectares, one-quarter of the arable land in Canada, was affected. With the great depression, many farms were abandoned, making previous farmers jobless and poor. Also creating conditions favourable to the spread of certain insect pests and plant and animal diseases. This can affect domestic, municipal, agricultural and industrial sectors.

Restricted Immigration (Political, -1)

1930

This shows it was disadvantageous because, after the Great Depression, the government applied severe restrictions to entry. Since many immigrants were going to be farmers in Canada, they were unprosperous during those times. There was greater deportation including its price. There were certain areas of people excluded from coming into Canada, like poor people. With major xenophobia and the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1924.

The Statue of Westminster (Political, +2)

This is good for Canada because the British law passed by the Parliament of the UK clarified the powers of the Canadian government, it made Canada a completely self-governing nation. This gave Canada freedom, control of internal and external affairs, the ability to pass laws under the UK, and more. Canada was starting to become more independent from the British Empire as they attended the Imperial Conference, a seat in the League of Nations, and more.

Bank of Canada Act (Economic, +1)

1934

The Bank of Canada Act is great because the Bank of Canada was created “to promote the economic and financial welfare of Canada.” The bank manages government funds, holds the main accounts of the Dominion and lend to it, monetary policy, currency management, financial system monitoring, and more. Importantly, the bank buys and sells bonds in the securities markets; while buying and selling gold and foreign monies in the foreign exchange market. Then Canadian money is exchanged for foreign money.

On to Ottawa Trek (Social, +1)

It was valuable because when there was a strike by unemployed men workers in the relief camps. Working in poor conditions and for low pay. The Worker's Unity League then started, led by Arthur Evan. They travelled to Vancouver and the government refused to help, then they went to Regina where major Union leaders were arrested. Recognition of what happened can help prevent a repeat of this, Arthur contributed to Bennet’s political decline, the increased popularity of the CPC, and more.
