    The Charter took effect as part of the Constitution Act, 1982 when Queen Elizabeth II finally signed the governing legislation, the Canada Act, 1982, making it official on April 17th. To this day, it is still keeping us protected.

    Marc Garneau was the first Canadian to travel to space. This was in 1984, and following that, from 2001 to 2005 he was president of the Canadian Space Agency. This is a very important legacy and achievements fr canadians.

    Rita Johnston becomes the first woman Premier
    British Columbia's Rita Johnston was and is a great female political figure. She was the first Canadian premier, setting the bar high for other women who hoped to be in politics.
  • Last Residential School Closed

    Last Residential School Closed
    Residential schools were religious schools established to assimilate Indigenous children into Canadian culture, erasing them of their traditions and beliefs. The last government-sponsored residential school was shut down in 1996. This finally freed many children and ended their suffering, though the memories would still be there. It protected future generations from having to endure such a terrible expirience.

    Same Sex marriage was legalized in Canada on July 20th, 2005. This showed one of the first steps of Canada progressing into becoming an even more welcoming country. It was the fourth country in the world to do this.

    In 2009, Justin Bieber released his first album. This went on to make him very popular, starting his long lasting and career. Many people know Canada based on the fact that justin Bieber was born here. This essentially put canada on the map (when it came to music)

    Justin Trudeau apologizes to residential school survivors
    The prime minister gave an official apology on behalf of the Government of Canada to past students of Newfoundland and Labrador residential schools. This was important because the issue was being confronted properly.

    Most decorated figure skaters in Olympic history
    Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir became the most decorated figure skaters in 2018 after winning gold in ice dance and in the team competition at the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang. (Most decorated is to have won the most metals/ awards/ etc).
