They were starving at that time, but the nobles were living in a very different environment. It’s the conversation of three estates: clergy, nobility, and commons. The aim of the conversation is to calm the turmoil of the third class and solve the country's economic crisis. The event of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie escaped to Austria shocked the French, they thought the king and queen betrayed France, so the citizens gathered on the Champ de Mars and calling for the king's abdication. The Marquis de Lafayette opened fire on a crowd of demonstrators, which leaded into some deaths. This event is very important because it is one of a major turning point of the French Revolution. In order to prevent other countries from supporting the French monarchy, the national convention (replaced the National Assembly) decided executed the king convicted of conspiracy with foreign powers. Louis XVI was killed by guillotine. On October 16 queen Marie followed her husband to the guillotine.
