    The bankers did not want to continue lending money to the French Government, King Louis was put into lots of trouble.

    Louis' solution to paying the money he owed, was to impose taxes on the nobility. The second estate forced him to meet with the Estates-General, to approve of the new taxing that would be going on. The first meeting in 175 years, was held on May 5, 1789

    This was the day that they voted to establish the National Assembly, proclaiming to end absolute monarchy and begin a representative government.

    A mob that was searching for gunpowder and arms arrived at Bastille, a prison in Paris. The mob of people scared the guard and took control of the building. They hacked the prison commander and killed several guards. This ocurred because there were rumors in Paris that Louis was planning on using military force to get rid of the National Assembly.

    Throughout the night of this day, some noblemen made great speeches, declaring that they truly embrace and believe in liberty and equality. They joined other members of the National Assembly in taking away feudal privileges that the First and Second Estates had, therefore making commoners equal to the nobles and clergy.

    Thousands of Parisan women got very angry because of the raising price of bread. The women held knives, axes and other weapons and marched on Versailles. The first thing that they demanded is that the National Assembly should provide bread, then they got mad with the king and queen. They all broke into the palace by killing some guards. They demanded that Louis and Marie should return to Paris, and after some time, Louis agreed.

    The royal family tried to escape from France. As they approached the border, they were returned to Paris under guard.

    The National Assembly restructured the relationship between the church and state, King Louis questioned his fate as a monarch. He was warned by his advisors that he and his family where is danger.

    As a result of many European countries being scared that their countries might turn out like France did, (got rid of absolute monarchy), they acted out and urged France to give King Louis his position back as king. Therefore, the Legislative Assembly declared war April 1792.
