    The third estate asked for a new voting system in which each representative would vote individually. When the king as the true representative of the nation, it was forming a NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. Finally, the king agreed to the Third Estate's demands. A new Constituent Assembly was formed to write a constitution.

    THE REPUBLIC CONVENTION

    The National Convention was a parliament of the French Revolution, following the two-year National Constituent Assembly and the one-year Legislative Assembly. Created after the great insurrection of 10 August 1792, it was the first French government organized as a republic, abandoning the monarchy altogether.

    DIRECTORY AND CONSULTATE

    The Directory used military force to put down uprisings. They also annulled elections when they didn't like the results. Despite these struggles, the Directory did help France to recover somewhat from the Terror and set the stage for future governments. Consulate, (1799–1804) French government established after the Coup of 18–19 Brumaire (Nov. 9–10, 1799), during the French Revolution. Napoleon abolished the Consulate when he declared himself emperor in 1804
