The 3rd estate of the Estates General met in a tennis court. They swore an oath that they would remain until France had a constitution.

The Bastille was governed by Marquis de Launay. He had the Bastille prepared for an attack of 100 people, but was attacked by 300 citizens along with the fact that 300 guards left their posts that day. They demanded that the bridge be lowered, and eventually succeeded, captured their soilders, and killed most of them in public.

The Royal Family attempted to flee revolutionary France to Austria. There they planned to make an army of counter-revolutionaries to take back to France, but but were captured at Varennes.

Crowds gathered to sign a petition for a republican constitution and deposition of the king. The crowd turned on two suspicous individuals, which caused the National Guards to be called in and 50 people to be killed plus many more injured. This created more distrust by revolutionaries in Lafeyette and showed the begining of two revolutions-the original that began in 1789 and a new, more radical one which aimed to make France a republic.

The popular movement sans-culottes marched into Tuileries Palace and demanded that the king wear the revolutionary symboland toast the nation. He agreed but denied to give up his veto powers.

The 48 local councils of Paris merged into one radical body, a virtual parliament. They demanded to be recognised as the government of the working people.

The Insurrectionary Commune organised 20,000 people for a demonstration aginst the king. King Louis XVI had only 900 Swiss guards, 700 royalist guards, and 2,000 National Guards of questionable loyalty.The crowd marched and called to overthrow the king, the National Guards swithced sides and the king was handed over to the people, thus the revolution had been shifted from being driven by the middle class to the working class.

The National Convention was set up, elected by universal male suffrage to provide a new constitution after the deposition of the king.

In October 1789, a mob marched to Versailles and forced the Royal Family to move to Tuileries. In August 1792, the Royal Couple was arrested by the san-cullouttes and imprisioned until execution on Jan. 21, 1793
