Mansa Musa was the grandnephew of Sundiata and became the next ruler of Mali. He was a very religious Muslim, so he traveled to the holy city of Mecca for the pilgrimage. He bought thousands of slaves and loads of gold to show off his wealth.

Mansa Musa dies, but the Mali empire still had a good economy and nationalism.

Mali's empire falls to Songhai, who is lead by a muslim Sunni Ali.

Askia Muhammad rises to the throne and he encouraged education and trade. He also increased Songhai's power by forcing nearby communites to give extra soldiers.

Askia makes a pilgrimage just like Mansa Musa did, but instead of gold and slaves, he brought back docters, architects and scienctists.

Songhai made improvements to their civilization such as adding more schools, mosques, banks and courts to thier empire.

Songhai remains strong until it falls in 1700 A,D. The amries of Morocco and Spain attacked the last great African Empire.
