    John CabotJohn Cabot was a Italian-born explorer. He arrived on the shores of Newfoundland . He was sent by the English king to explore the land on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. He did not make contact with the Native people there. When he went back to England, he told his people about how much sea life there was there. This sent fisherman going to Newfoundland and they also traded with the First Nations people.

He met the Mi'kmaq and the Iroquois, and he traded European goods for furs. Cartier put up an cross to claim the land for France. The Iroquois cheif, Donnacona, realized that he was claiming the land, and got angry. However, Cartier told him that it was to help find his way if he got lost.

The Settlers and the French traded metal goods with the Mi'kmaq, the Huron, the Algonquin, the Montagnais, and the Etchemin, who had beaver furs. Champlain was allies with the natives he traded with and the Iroquois were their enemy.
