  • Greek Civil War

    Greek Civil War
Living in Greece was a lot different than when I moved to Canada. During World War ll the Germans were occupying the streets and everyday we had to hide from them. After WWll ended, the Civil War started and the Italians, Bulgarians and Germans all wanted to split Greece up. I had escaped Greece in time because I was going to be recruited to be in the Army. All men had to be in the army once they reached the age of 18 and I did not want to have to fight for the fear of being injured or killed.

Major events that affected the way I lived as a child in Greece were World War 2 and the Greek Civil War. The Greek government only cared about the health of the army going to war rather than the people living in Greece. There were a lot of unsafe places to be living in Greece when I was growing up which is why coming to Canada provided me with a safer environment to grow up in. I would also have the opportunity of a better future in Canada.

    Greece
I left Greece when I did because the lifestyle I was living was in poverty. There were not many jobs open, money or food resources because Greece was under war with the Germans. Since this war was going on, most of my friends and family were in hiding and living like peasants. This made my decision to leave Greece for Canada much easier hoping for a better lifestyle.

  • Canadian Prime Minister

    Canadian Prime Minister
My experience dealing with the Canadian Government went well at the time. Louis St. Laurent was the Canadian Prime Minister at the time and he wanted to increase the population of Canada as much and as quickly as possible. He was open to immigration which is why the process was not so difficult.

  • Transportation

    Transportation
The process of immigrating was very difficult to do because you had leave your other family members behind. It was very risky to spend a lot of money to get to Canada and take a chance with a new developing country that you didn’t know very much about. At the beginning in Canada, it was very difficult to find a job without being able to speak English or know how to find one. I travelled with very little money and clothes which made the changes very big and it took a lot of time to adapt.
  • Toronto, Canada

    Toronto, Canada
I first arrived in Canada in the 1950’s when the country was still establishing itself. I arrived as an immigrant here and it was very easy to enter Canada because the government wanted to increase the population as quickly as possible. Canada was a growing country and was accepting many immigrants from around the world, like the Greeks who were involved in a war at the time.My first impressions of Canada were extremely good because Toronto was a very upcoming city.
