    The Creation of United Nations
    In San Fransico, the Allied powers came together to draft a charter for the United Nations. Part of this charter was a United Nations Declartion of Human Rights, which Canadian John Humfrey helped to write. Canada was among the founding countries.

    The Allies won the war by defeating Germany, Italy and Japan. Canada helped the Allies defeat the Nazis and liberate countries from Nazi occupation. Canada greatly helped the allies in the victory, especially in the battle of Juno beach.

    NATO is a military alliance. It stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Canada was one of the founding countries of NATO, and so they promised to protect the other countries in the alliance.

    Mao Zedong took over the government of China and so he became the communist leader of China. Unlike the United States, Canada recognized the Mao Zedong government.

    The communist North Korea invaded South Korea because they wanted to make all of the country communist. Canada was one of many countries that served with the United Nations to defend South Korea from North Korea. Over 26,000 thousands Canadian soldiers seved in this war.

    This pact was developed in response to the creaton of NATO. It was a defensive alliance of Soviet Union and its satellite states. Canada did not contribute to this pact.

    Lester Pearson Diffuses the Suez Crisis
    The President of Egypt took over the Suez Canal which was originally controlled by Britain and France. Lester Pearson, who was the Minister of External Affairs for Canada, suggested to create the United Nations Emergency Force. Pearson's suggestion resulted in army forces being replaced with UN peacekeeping forces and war was avoided. Lester Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

    Ho Chi Minh initiated the war of Vietnam by invading the south of Vietnam. The US responded by attacking North Vietnamese Communist troops. Canada accepted American draft dodgers during the Vietnam War.

    East Germany started to build this wall in 1961. It was built to keep people from fleeing East Germany to West Germany. Canada did not contribute to building the wall.

    The US was really concerned about the USSR's stockpile in Cuba. This crisis increased tensions between the US and the USSR over the issue of USSR's weapon in Cuba. Canada was an ally of the US but wasn't really involved with the crisis.

    The Soviet's invaded Afghanistan to expand their influence and they installed a new dictator, as President Babrak Karmal. Canada did not contribute to this invasion.

    East Germany declared that their boarder would be open to everyone. People lined up to go through the Berlin Wall to West Germany. Ordinary people helped demolish the wall. Canada did not play a part of this.

    It began in late 2001. The reasons why Canada was to be a part of this was to defend Canada's national interest, ensure Canada's leadership in world affairs and help Afghanistan rebuild. There were 158 deaths have died in this.
