    The Cold War stretched from 1947-1991 between the United States of America and the Soviet Union. The main reason for this was because of communism (USSR) vs capitalism (USA). There was no actual fighting but they competed indirectly by supplying weapons to opposing sides like Afghanistan. From 1950-1953, the Korean War broke out. The south was supported by USA well the north was supported by the USSR. As a result, Canada supports USA who supported the south. That created North and South Korea

    Maurice Duplessis loved the Church and was really old fashion and traditional. He believed that the Church should run the schools and hospitals and other industries. He gave the Church a lot of power in that way.

    Maurice Duplessis and agriculture
    Duplessis was very old fashion and was very in favor of the Church. Therefore he promoted rural life and agriculture. He believed that agriculture should be the top economic sector of Quebec so he brought electricity and paved roads to the farms. He was heavily criticized by the intellectuals, journalists and feminists for being too old fashion and slowing Quebec's industrialization and development.

    Duplessis believed in provincial autonomy. Therefore when Canada wanted to build a highway across Canada, Duplessis agreed but refused funding aid from Canada. That is why the roads in Quebec are much worse then the rest of the country because Quebec had a much smaller budget then if they accepted payments from Canada. Also, he was in favor of Americanism, which is when the USA would come to Quebec, spend US dollars to build up our industries and take our products but not pay anything to Quebec.

    More people were becoming Americanized. There was more money than ever to go around and it led to people getting more TVs and cars and other luxuries. People started watching more American TV shows and movies and listening to American music. Although some Candian TV shows such as Hockey Night in Canada became increasinly popular.

    The Canadian Arctic was a passageway between the Atlantic and the Pacific by boat. Canada claimed it as part of their territory so they made sure people needed the authorization to go there. They put 100 Inuits there to prove that it was their territory. In 2010, Canada apologized to the Inuits for what happened in the past because it was brutally cold.

    Natives were taken from their homes and villages by the Canadian government and put into residential schools in the goal of being assimilated. Residential schools were led by the Church. There, the kids were forced to learn the "English white ways" while they were being sexually, physically and verbally abused. They also learned a practical trade like construction work and were forced to do unpaid labor for it. in 1969 residenial schools closed because the government pulled funding for it.

    A baby boom occurred between 1945-1960. More than 2 million babies were born in those 15 years. In addition, Canada accepted more than 30,000 immigrants, who favored English language and culture. At the end of the 1960s, the birth rate was in decline because more people were getting married later, women were starting to work and contraception was becoming increasingly reliable as the Church was becoming less important to many people.

    RD: Farms started to modernize because Duplessis was bringing electricity to rural areas. New hydro networks are being built in the farm regions UA: Baby boomers helped developed cities and suburbs were created. NA: After WWII, 20,000-30,000 people immigrated from Europe to Canada. They mostly favored English speaking people.

    Began in 1960 when the Union Nationale was defeated by the liberal party led by Jean Lesage. Its goal was to separate Church and state and to modernize.
