    In August of 1867 the Dominion of Canada held its first election. Sir John A. MacDonald won because of his promise to bring Canada together by building an inter-colonial railway.

    Building the railway
    On this day MacDonald annouced that over the next 10 years he would be building a railway to bring Canada together. The railway was succesfully finished in 1881. The two lines met on November 7th 1885 and the last spike was drvin by Donald Smith. The first passenger train went across Canada on July 4th 1886. Its final stop was at Port Moody, British Columbia

    Secret Ballot
    Before the secret ballot, the Prime Minister could choose which districts would vote first. They would usually pick the ones, they knew would vote for them. Being so, when the other districts heard about who is currently winning, they would vote for the Prime Minister running as well. Alexander Mackenzie changed this so that everyone would vote on the same day making the winner completely anonymous.

    The BNA Act had provided for a Supreme Court but, it was not established until Mackenzie's term as Prime Minister. By court of appeal, this was set to be one of Alexander Mackenzie's accomplishments during his term as Prime Minister

    After British troops left Central Canada in 1871, Mackenzie built this college to increase Canadian military. This College was built in 1874 but, it was not established until 1876. Graduates from this college served in World War 1.
