Canadian Immigration

  • Chinese Head Tax

    Chinese Head Tax
To do so, the federal parliament passed in 1885 the Chinese Immigration Act, which stipulated that all Chinese entering Canada must first pay a $50 fee, later referred to as a head tax. This was amended in 1887, 1892, and 1900, with the fee increasing to its maximum of $500 in 1903. I picked this event because I think the Chinese Head Tax was really unfair.

  • Immigrants in the Prairie

    Immigrants in the Prairie
Clifford Sifton was held the position of Minister of Interior (with responsibilities for immigration). He fulfilled his vision of peopling the prairies with agricultural immigrants. The immigrants he sought for the Canadian West were farmers (preferably from the U.S. or Britain, otherwise (northern)
    European).
I picked this event to show that Canada's immigration policy wasn't racist (Picture in not of Clifford Sifton).

  • Indians, Chinese and Japanese

    Indians, Chinese and Japanese
4,700 Indians arrived in Vancouver. Arrivals of Japanese and Chinese had increased (more than 2,300 Japanese arrived in B.C. in 1907). Reaction by white British Columbians was described by the Minister of the Interior as "almost uproarious". An "Anti-Asiatic Parade" organized by the Asiatic Exclusion League ended in a fight, with bad damage done to property in Chinatown and the Japanese quarter. I picked this event because I want to show how racist Canadians were being to Asian people on 1906.
  • Black Oklahoman Farmers

    Black Oklahoman Farmers
In 1910 a bunch of Black People wanted to come to Canada to flee from racism at their home. At that time Canada had a law that "any immigrant belonging to the Negro race, which race is deemed unsuitable to the climate and requirements of Canada". Even though the Law was never passed Black People were still not allowed in Canada. I picked this event because everyone can see that racism existed in Canada on 1910.

  • Hutterites Alberta

    Hutterites Alberta
About 4,000 Hutterites immigrated to Alberta from South Dakota, where they were suffering prejudice because they were German-speaking. Their entry to Canada was permitted under an 1899 order in council originally intended for Doukhobors. I picked this event because I want to show that Hutterites were discriminated by their own country by their language and religon.

The Railway Agreement was signed by the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways and the government, providing for the railways to recruit immigrants, including from the "non-preferred" countries of Northern and Central Europe. More than 185,000 Central Europeans entered Canada under the agreement (1925-1929). I picked this event because I want to show how Canada brought in Chinese people to work in the Railway Agreement.
